Following the success of the first National Woodfest a second event has taken place in July at the Exchange in Howard Street, North Shields.
This is a unique beer festival because all beers at the event are drawn from wooden casks. Prior to the festival starting on Thursday a distinguished group of judges led by renowned beer writer Rodger Protz will again chose the Champion Beer from the Wood.
Last years Gold Medal winner Haymaker returned to defend their crown, along with Hook Norton Hooky Mild. The perennial favourite 1872 Porter from Elland was OTB as well as beers from Wylam, Ridgeside, BrewYork, Phipps, Bad Seed and Blackjack, just to name a few.
This years winner was Wylam Hickey The Rake, silver went to another local brewery Three Kings with their version of a brown ale called True North and taking the Bronze award was Yorkshire Brewing Company Mutiny. The presentation to Wylam Brewery will take place at the Palace of the Arts on Saturday 15th September.
