May/June
Event | Derby Day |
Date/Time | Friday May 31st to Saturday 1st June |
Venue | Epsom |
Details | An informal visit to either/both The Oaks on Friday 31 May and The Derby on Saturday 1 June. Peter Campbell is happy to meet people in Epsom town centre. The plan would be to take a bus up to the course and head for The Hill which is free entry and has a funfair, big screens and a market. It’s the last of the big sporting events in this country that you can view for free, unless you count the Oxford Cambridge boat race. Gambling is not compulsory. Beforehand, people could buy drinks and food in town if they wish and take them onto the course. Soon after the big race, we would walk down Ashley Road and stop off in The Rising Sun, Epsom which is at its best at this time of year. The pub also has a barbecue in the garden. On Oaks Day, after The Rising Sun we could walk past The Grumpy Mole which has the predicted Derby winner chalked on its wishing well. We could then head into town and visit Spoons and The Rifleman. Then head back, possibly via Surbiton’s excellent Spoons. The station opposite offers a faster route into central London. |

June
Event | SPBW Away Day to Three Hills Brewery Tap, Northants |
Date/Time | Saturday June 15th |
Venue | The Way Station, 5 Cosy Nook, NN14 4PS |
Details | We are arranging an SPBW away day to the Three Hills Brewery and Tap in Thrapston, Northants on Saturday June 15th. Three Hills supplied the Russian Imperial stouts for the Mini ‘Woodfest’ in mid February at ‘Ye Olde’ Mitre’. There are a number of pubs in both Thrapston and Kettering than can be visited. Thrapston: Kings Arms, Fox Inn, Mason Arms, Court House Inn. Kettering: Old Market Inn, Stitching Pony, Earl of Dalkeith, Rising Sun, Alexandra Arms, Shire Horse plus a few others. Travel: Trains from St Pancras to Kettering at 9.45 (arr. 10.45) and 10.45 (arr.11.45) take 1 hour. Approximate ticket price £24 return. Then Bus (Route 16) (a short walk to bus stop from Station – nearest stop is St Mary’s Hospital) takes about 30 minutes. The buses do not run very often so the best one is at 12.39 at St Mary’s hospital and get off at the ‘Library’ stop at 13.10 in Thrapston. Then a short walk to ‘Cosy Nook’. The tap will be showing the ‘Euros’ on a large screen (alas maybe for some!!). |

July
Event | Bill English Memorial Day |
Date/Time | Saturday July 6th |
Venue | Sheffield |
Details | In true Bill style we will start with a Wetherspoon’s breakfast at 11am in the Bankers Draft, 1-3 Market Place, Sheffield City Centre, S1 2GH. If downstairs is busy, there is more room to eat upstairs. Follow the signs to the tram at the rear of Sheffield station, (keep to the right out of the station, do not cross the tracks), it is just two stops to the Castle Square stop which is right outside the grade II listed ex Midlands Bank pub. I am aiming to visit 7 other pubs, all with exteriors or interiors of historic interest, all without too much walking, as we will be using the tram to go further afield and save our legs. A day ticket is currently £4.50, bought from the conductor, but if you are lucky enough to have an English bus pass, travel is free of charge, just don’t forget your pass! We will finish in the Sheffield Tap, another gem of a pub, (with on site brewery) right next to the station, arriving around 7.15pm for a last drink before people leave to catch their trains home. |
Contact | If you have any questions please contact me, Lynn Atack. An idea of how many are hoping to attend would be good, but not essential, and I’m sure a good day will be had by all, I hope to see you there, Lynn Atack. |
