SPBW 60th Anniversary Celebration
Rising Sun, Epsom, Sunday 3 December 2023
All SPBW members are invited to join the celebration of the founding of SPBW, from noon onwards.
The Rising Sun offers a buffet at £12 per head, but requires a minimum of 25 for this. If you wish to attend and have the buffet please let us know as soon as possible – email treasurer@spbw.beer.
If we hit this target we will contact you to ask for the £12 up front.
Alternatively, you can choose from the pub’s menu, ordering at the bar on the day. The Rising Sun’s website is at: https://www.risingsun-pub.co.uk
SPBW DERBY DAY
As part of our Anniversary celebrations, there will be an outing to Derby on
Saturday 8 July. Meet at the Brunswick, Railway Terrace between 12 and 1pm.
Then we’ll move on to a selection of the excellent pubs in this city renowned for its
beer selection. Derby is easy to get to from various parts of the country so we hope
to see plenty of our members – all are welcome. For more details, please contact
Roger (editor@spbw.beer).
The day out is also in honour of the late Bill English who loved the city and its pubs;
it has been a custom for some of his friends to emulate his consumption of two full
English breakfasts before drinking commences. Be assured, this is not compulsory!
WOODFEST 2023 (WF4) EGHAM USC UPDATE
We are now further advanced with the planning for ‘Woodfest 4’.
The opening hours are: Thursday 11th May – 3 PM to 10,30 PM
Friday 12th May – Noon to 10.30 PM
Saturday 13th May – Noon to 10.30 PM
The venue capacity is a little less than last year. So to avoid disappointment it is advisable to pre book via the website shop using the link below. On receipt of your booking you will be emailed ticket(s) which we would like you to bring either in printed paper form or on your mobile phone.
WOODFEST 2023 (WF4)
The fourth SPBW WoodFest will be held from 11 – 13 May at Egham United Services Club, 111 Spring Rise, Egham, Surrey TW20 9PE.
EUSC is well known to aficionados of good ale for its regular beer festivals. It’s less than half a mile from Egham rail station (Waterloo – Reading line).
Details of opening times, admission prices etc will be on our website as soon as possible, or contact wf3treasurer@yahoo.com.
We need volunteers to staff the festival as well as help with the set-up from Monday to Wednesday (8th – 10th) and the take-down on the Sunday after the festival. Anyone interested in helping, please contact Angela Aspin, who handles the volunteering, at angelajaspin@manx.net.
We had originally planned to return to the Turk’s Head for WF4 but a rugby match at nearby Twickenham made this unavailable.
BEER & CURRY SUNDAY 12th March
This year’s B&C will be on Sunday 12 March. The fun will start at the Astronomer, 125 Middlesex Street, London E1 7JF from 12 noon. The pub is just off Bishopsgate, close to Liverpool Street station and serves beers from the Fullers/Dark Star range. The aim is to leave here 13.15ish and then visit the Kings Stores, Williams Ale House, Commercial Tavern and finish at the Pride of Spitalfields, just off Brick Lane at about 17.30 (the same itinerary as last year). We’ll then make our way to a suitable restaurant.
All are welcome – please contact Roger (editor@spbw.beer) for more details of the pubs/route and possible even a map.
